Jains in Delhi save 122 goats from being slaugthered on Bakrid by paying Rs 11 lakhs

In a heartwarming gesture ahead of Bakrid, People from the Jain community in old Delhi area of Chandni Chowk area saved life of 122 goats from being sacrificed by paying 11 lakh rupees from their own pocket.

After buying these goats from the Chandni Chowk market on June 16, these good Samaritans brought these goats to a Dharmshala, where food and water was provided by the volunteers for these 122 poor animals.

For those who do not know, Jains have been doing this service since ages, even during the Mughal rule.

A day before this happened, a famous Twitter handle named True Indology had written that –

Marwaris, Jains, and Baniyas traditionally practiced a religious custom on Bakrid where they would purchase animals destined for slaughter.

They kept these animals until the end of the day and then released them. In the 17th century, they bought so many animals in Ahmedabad that none were available for Bakrid.

Although Aurangzeb banned this practice, it continued, both secretly and openly, into the 21st century.
